Adam’s journey reads like a thrilling chapter in the annals of Australian motorsport, with roots deeply embedded in the iconic Winton Raceway of Benalla, Victoria. Born into a world where the roar of engines echoed through the air, Adam’s destiny was intricately woven into the fabric of motorsport from the very beginning.
Adam’s family legacy at Winton Raceway is a story of remarkable transformation. Adam’s father, a visionary in his own right, took the helm as the manager of Winton Raceway, turning it from a humble venue run from the kitchen table into a multi-million-dollar internationally recognized motor racing facility. Growing up alongside his brother Matthew, Adam was immersed in the world of racing, the racetrack itself becoming a second home.
From the early days of sweeping floors, picking up rubbish and cleaning toilets, Adam’s commitment and passion for motorsport propelled him through the ranks of Winton Raceway. He transitioned seamlessly from odd jobs to pivotal roles, serving as the Sales and Marketing Manager, Operations Manager, and eventually stepping into the shoes of his father as the Executive Officer. During his father’s tenure and with Adam and his brother working at his side, Winton Raceway expanded its influence by acquiring Wakefield Park in New South Wales, a testament to the strategic vision Adam’s father brought to the table.
After briefly taking on a stand-in manager’s role at Wakefield Park, Adam returned to his roots at Winton Raceway as the Operations Manager. His leadership and dedication ensured the continued success of the facility, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of Australian motorsport.
In 2015, a new chapter unfolded as Adam accepted the role of Venue Manager for Lakeside Park in Queensland. The move showcased his versatility and adaptability, as he brought his wealth of motorsport knowledge to a new region. However, the call of hands-on mechanical work beckoned, leading Adam to make a bold decision in 2017.
Leaving the motorsport industry behind, Adam embarked on a mature age apprenticeship as a light vehicle mechanic. This marked a significant shift in his career trajectory, as he sought to deepen his understanding of the intricacies beneath the hoods of the powerful machines he had spent a lifetime around.
The onset of the COVID-19 outbreak brought unexpected challenges, including a battle with a gangrene infection that landed Adam in a hospital bed with the very real possibility of losing his left foot and faced with boredom, he turned to TikTok and, in a stroke of creativity, birthed “The Fat Mechanic.” This online persona quickly gained popularity, showcasing Adam’s humor, expertise, honesty, and genuine love for mechanics.
Today, Adam stands at the helm of two workshops—ABS Mt Ommaney and Midas Ipswich—bringing his mechanical prowess to the local community. His entrepreneurial spirit continues to thrive with Tampered Motorsport and VIP Track Days, offering enthusiasts the chance to share in the adrenaline of motorsport.
Adam’s biography is a testament to the enduring legacy of his family in Australian motorsport, the resilience of passion, and the boundless possibilities that unfold when one follows their heart across racetracks and workshop floors alike. From the hallowed grounds of Winton Raceway to the digital realm of TikTok, Adam Ronke’s story is a riveting tale of motorsport, mechanics, and the indomitable spirit of a true enthusiast.
